Cabin Nights II

The next morning I awoke to Angie shaking me awake. I rolled over to find that she had already packed her things, and most of mine.

“I’m ready to go,” she said.

I pulled myself to, head swimming, unsure what time I came to bed.

“Are you okay to drive?” I asked.

“I fucking guess!” She replied as she picked up her duffel bag and carried it out to the car.

I got dressed and got ready, passed through the living room to find Samantha awake and doing a workout video.

“What time is it?” I slurred.

“Time for Kyle to be done with breakfast. You two are staying for that, right?”

“I don’t know,“ I said as I went back into the bedroom and packed up the rest of my stuff. Throwing my backpack on, I went out to the car to find Angie already in the driver's seat waiting for me. I threw my backpack into the backseat and got in.

“How do I get back to your house?”

I gave directions as we mostly sat in silence. Even the music that usually breaks the ice between us only seemed to make things even more awkward and sad.

“I’m sorry,” I had said as the city’s skyline came into view.

“I am too,” she said softly. I reached over and took her hand. “Have you heard Stolen Babies yet?” I asked, picking up my iPod and thumbing through my library.

“What the fuck kind of name is that?” She asked.

“An awesome one!” I replied, “They’re the reason I’m learning the accordion!” I replied with enthusiasm.

“What the fuck?” She exclaimed.

Her incredulity didn’t fade as I put on the album and turned up the volume. And I spent the rest of the drive home in the awkward feeling of knowing that she probably hated the music but said nothing to indicate that it should be changed.
